To rotate image files correctly, first decide whether the problem is a simple sideways orientation or a small visual tilt. This page provides 90-degree and 180-degree turns for orientation fixes, an exact angle for straightening, and two canvas behaviors that make clipping and empty corners explicit before you download the result.
The tool is intended for one photograph, screenshot, scan, product image or graphic that points in the wrong direction. It creates a new JPG, PNG or WebP file from the visible source pixels. It does not flip the image, read a horizon automatically, correct perspective or change only an EXIF orientation flag.
Choose the kind of rotation
Most rotation tasks fall into two groups:
| What looks wrong | Practical starting point |
|---|---|
| Photo is sideways | 90° left or 90° right |
| Photo is upside down | Turn 180° |
| Horizon or scan is slightly tilted | Enter a small exact angle |
| Rotated corners must all remain visible | Fit entire image |
| Output dimensions must remain unchanged | Keep original canvas and inspect clipping |
Use the preview rather than relying only on the number. “Clockwise” describes movement from the top toward the right. “Counterclockwise” describes movement from the top toward the left. The correct choice depends on how the subject currently appears.
How to rotate an image on this page
- Choose one image. Add a JPG, PNG or WebP file up to 40 MB. The source dimensions, format and file size appear under the preview.
- Set the direction. Use 90° left, 90° right or Turn 180° for common orientation fixes. Use the slider or numeric field for an exact value between -180° and 180°.
- Choose the canvas behavior. Fit entire image expands the output rectangle around the rotated corners. Keep original canvas preserves the source width and height but can cut off pixels that turn outside that frame.
- Choose an output format. Select JPG, PNG or WebP. JPG and WebP include a 40–100% quality control. PNG is exported losslessly by this browser workflow.
- Rotate and inspect. Check the final orientation, dimensions, canvas mode, empty-corner behavior and file size before downloading the new file.
Changing a setting clears the previous result. This prevents an older download from being mistaken for the rotation currently shown in the preview.
Clockwise, counterclockwise and exact angles
On this page, positive values rotate clockwise and negative values rotate counterclockwise. A value of 90° points the original top edge toward the right. A value of -90° points it toward the left. Both 180° and -180° produce the same upside-down orientation.
Quarter turns are usually the clearest choice because the image edges remain aligned with the rectangular canvas. They also produce predictable dimensions: with Fit entire image, a 4000 × 3000 source rotated 90° becomes 3000 × 4000.
Exact angles are useful for a slightly tilted document, product photograph or horizon. Start with a small value such as 1° or -1° and inspect straight lines in the preview. Large arbitrary angles are valid, but they usually create larger empty corner regions and a larger bounding canvas.
This tool rotates around the center of the image. It does not automatically identify a horizon or choose a correction angle, so exact-angle straightening remains a visual decision.
Fit the image or keep the original canvas
Rotation changes the relationship between an image and its rectangular boundary. The canvas option determines what happens to pixels that no longer fit that boundary.
Fit entire image
This is the default and the safer choice when no content should be lost. The output dimensions are calculated from the rotated width and height so all four corners fit. A quarter turn swaps dimensions. An arbitrary angle can increase both dimensions because the diagonal image needs a wider and taller rectangle.
Keep original canvas
This keeps the source width and height exactly. The image still rotates around its center, but pixels outside the original rectangle are clipped. This can be useful when a fixed-size frame matters and the lost edges are acceptable. It is not equivalent to fitting or cropping intelligently; inspect the preview carefully.
The distinction is a central part of this tool. Instead of silently changing dimensions or cutting corners, the page names the behavior and shows the expected output frame before processing.
Format, quality and empty corners
A rectangle rotated by an angle other than a multiple of 90° leaves areas of the output canvas with no source pixels. The selected format determines how those areas are encoded:
- PNG: empty corners remain transparent and the output uses lossless PNG encoding.
- WebP: empty corners remain transparent and the quality setting controls the browser’s WebP encoding.
- JPG: empty corners become white because this JPG workflow does not preserve transparency.
JPG and WebP quality changes encoding, not rotation geometry. Lower quality may reduce file size but can soften edges or introduce artifacts. PNG has no adjustable quality slider here because the Canvas export uses lossless PNG encoding.
Rotating through Canvas creates a new file. Even a 90° turn is re-encoded in this implementation, so the page does not claim that the operation is lossless. The new file also does not preserve the original EXIF, GPS, ICC or other file metadata.
The browser operation uses Canvas transforms: translate() moves the drawing origin to the center and rotate() changes the coordinate system before the image is drawn. The generated canvas is then encoded with toBlob().
Read the result before downloading
The final preview should be checked before the numbers. Confirm that text is upright, the subject points in the expected direction and important edges have not been clipped.
Then read the report:
- Rotation: confirms the applied degree value and direction.
- Dimensions: shows the actual generated width and height, not only the source dimensions.
- Canvas: distinguishes the expanded full-image result from the original-size clipping mode.
- Output size: reports the actual Blob created by the browser.
- Empty corners: states whether unused areas are transparent or white.
- Metadata: confirms that the newly encoded result does not retain source metadata in this implementation.
File size may increase even when dimensions appear similar. The output format, quality, transparent areas and source encoding all influence the final byte count. Use the Image Compressor afterward when file weight is the next requirement.
Illustrative rotation examples
Correct a sideways landscape photo
Assume a 4000 × 3000 JPG appears sideways. Choose 90° right and Fit entire image. The expected output frame is 3000 × 4000. The subject becomes upright and no source pixels are clipped.
Straighten a tilted scan
Assume a 2400 × 1600 PNG is tilted slightly clockwise. Enter -2° to turn it counterclockwise and keep Fit entire image. The bounding canvas becomes slightly larger than the source and transparent pixels appear in the corners.
Illustrative examples. Exact file size depends on the selected image, format, quality and browser encoder. Use the generated result panel for actual dimensions and bytes.
If the rotated image needs a specific final width and height, rotate first, inspect the frame, then use the Image Resizer. If the rotation exposes unwanted edges, use Crop Image after rotation rather than choosing Keep original canvas without checking what it removes.
Scope and alternatives
base97 combines quick quarter turns, exact-degree rotation, a live preview, explicit canvas behavior, three output formats and a detailed result report. The selected image stays in the current browser, and the interface explains clipping, transparency and re-encoding rather than hiding those trade-offs.
Other tools serve broader or different workflows:
- Adobe Express combines image rotation with a larger design editor, templates and additional adjustments. It fits projects where rotation is only one step in creating a composed asset.
- Canva supports rotation inside its design editor, including free rotation and continued editing. It is useful when the image already belongs in a Canva layout.
- Img2Go exposes clockwise, counterclockwise and degree-based controls in a broader online image workflow.
- ResizePixel provides a focused page for rotating JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF images. It is an alternative when its wider input-format list is required.
The base97 difference is not a claim that rotation itself is unique. The practical difference is the visible choice between expanded and fixed canvas modes, the matching live preview, and a result report that states dimensions, clipping risk, empty-corner behavior and metadata status.
This version does not support batch rotation, automatic horizon detection, perspective correction, freehand cropping, flipping, animation preservation, cloud imports or metadata-only orientation changes.
Troubleshoot rotation problems
The image turned in the wrong direction
Use the opposite 90° button or reset the angle. Remember that positive values move clockwise and negative values move counterclockwise.
Parts of the image disappeared
Keep original canvas is selected. Switch to Fit entire image to expand the output around every rotated corner. Use Crop Image later when you want to remove edges deliberately.
White corners appeared
The rotation uses an arbitrary angle and the output is JPG. Choose PNG or WebP when transparent corners are required, or crop the result to remove those areas.
The result dimensions became larger
Fit entire image expands the canvas around a diagonal rectangle. This is expected for arbitrary angles. A 90° turn only swaps width and height.
The result looks softer or has artifacts
Canvas creates a new encoded image. Raise JPG or WebP quality, avoid repeated save cycles, or choose PNG when lossless output is appropriate for the image type.
The browser cannot create the result
The expanded canvas can contain more pixels than the source. This page blocks outputs above 40 million pixels, but device memory limits can be lower. Use Keep original canvas, start from a smaller source or resize the image first.
Rotate image FAQ
Should I rotate left or right?
Choose the direction that places the top of the subject at the top of the preview. A positive angle on this page rotates clockwise; a negative angle rotates counterclockwise.
Why do the output dimensions change after rotation?
Fit entire image expands the rectangular canvas around every rotated corner. A 90-degree turn swaps width and height, while an arbitrary angle can make both output dimensions larger.
Why are there white or transparent corners?
A rectangle turned by an angle other than a multiple of 90 degrees does not fill another rectangle. PNG and WebP keep those empty pixels transparent; JPG fills them with white in this tool.
Is the selected image uploaded to base97?
No. The image is decoded, rotated, encoded and prepared for download with browser APIs on the current device. This tool does not send the selected image to a base97 server.
